Wardrobe Wisdom

September 24th, 2010

A new season brings with a great opportunity to have a good wardrobe weed out. So now that temperatures have taken a chillier turn, here are some useful tips on how to transition your clothes so that your wardrobe keeps up with the weather.

Out with the old season

Take out any distinctly summery items such as shorts, linen trousers and summer dresses. If you can, try to keep only current season clothes in your day to day wardrobe. This makes life much easier for you in terms of seeing what can be worn right now. It’s also nice to be reunited with these summer clothes when the weather starts getting warmer again.

trousers

Bring your classic tailored jackets back to the forefront of your wardrobe for Autumn/Winter.

Take care

Launder any summery items and check for loose hems and buttons before storing them away. Do the same with any autumn and winter items that you are getting reacquainted with. Everything in your day to day wardrobe should be wearable and it’s worth a little bit of effort , so that you can get dressed with ease.

Cosy knits in neutral colours will never go out of fashion.

Mind the gaps

Go through each item in your wardrobe and try it on to see if it still fits and flatters. If not then donate it to the charity shop or friends and family. If there are clothes that you can’t fit into but really believe you will again in the future,  make sure you store these separately as they just take up valuable wardrobe space.  Now go through and see what gaps you have in your wardrobe. What are the pieces of clothing that you desperately need to pull different looks together and to get more wear out of your other clothes? Write a list and make sure you keep this with you when you are shopping on the high street or on-line. You’ll make much more effective and valuable purchases this way.

trousers

Hang up your trousers so they don’t lose their shape.

Simple storage

Make sure your clothes are hung correctly. Jackets need heavier weight hangers to help keep their shape. Trousers are best hung up vertically from the waistband and knitwear should ideally be folded rather than hung on coat hangers, to avoid stretching it out of shape.

Style to suit your personality

August 21st, 2010

Have you ever wondered why some clothes make your heart sink because the style just ‘isn’t you’, yet others make you feel amazing and seem like a second skin?

If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then you’ve experienced the phenomena called Style Personalities. Your Style Personality is a little bit like your star sign, it’s those dominant traits in your personality that make you choose certain retailers above others, wear certain colours, fabrics and shapes of clothing and to dress in a certain way.  We’re all born with natural preferences but these also can change over time according to our circumstances.

Let’s begin with the “Natural” style personality. Naturals love fabrics that stretch and give, plant based fibres like cotton and denim also simple shapes, roomy styles and comfy shoes. We all have a tendency to become more natural as we grow older.

elegant

But what if you love fabrics to be perfectly pressed, crisp, opulent and expensive. If your look is also pared down but you always look immaculate and well groomed, then you’re “Elegant”.

This is the most admired style personality and the hardest look to achieve – think of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn some of the greatest icons of style, their look takes effort, dedication and meticulousness.creative

The nurturers amongst us, those who love flower patterns, floaty styles, and anything with trimmings and embellishments have a “Feminine” style personality. Men can also be feminine – Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen has the Feminine style personality down to a tee!

Ever wondered why Kate Moss can wear the quirkiest of things and manage to look cool and stylish? That’s because she has the “Creative” style personality. Creatives love to mix weird and wonderful combinations together, they are the trendsetters never the followers and they usually buy clothes more frequently as they easily get bored.

The opposite of creative is “Classic”. Those of us who stick to the same shapes, colours and styles, year after year. If you’re classic, you’ll prefer traditional styles rather than the latest fashions, so do buy the best you can afford as you’re likely to hang onto your clothes longer than most.

That dramaticbrings us nicely on to the final two style personalities. If you like to be the centre of attention, or at the very least you’d hate to fade into the background, the chances are you’re “Dramatic”. You’ll favour bold prints, sharp contrasting colours and large, chunky, eye-catching pieces of jewellery.

Finally, the Alluring style personality likes shorter hemlines, lower necklines, shiny, clingy fabrics and anything with animal prints. We’re all capable of being alluring, this is a side of our personalities that is racy, flirtatious, enticing, daring and provocative.

Taking time to understand your style personality is fun but is also very useful in tapping into your hidden preferences. The better you understand yourself, the more successfully you’ll be able to express the inner you to the rest of the world!

A/W Style Review

August 6th, 2010

Autumn is fast approaching again and after a brief spell of Summer sunshine along with the typical British rain, it is time to say goodbye to the florals and floaty summer dresses and look to the new trends for the coming months.

There are some exciting new fashion trends on the horizon so read on to make sure your business wardrobe ticks all the boxes and help you to make a statement this Autumn.

Navynavy

Still a strong choice for the new season, navy is still the new black and is a failsafe way to look smart and chic in the office. It’s a great alternative to black and grey and can be paired with many other colours.

Romantic

Sheer fabrics and delicate lace are set to be big this Autumn but it’s all about adapting the trend to keep it office appropriate and still look professional. A sheer blouse with a vest underneath teamed with fitted trousers gives a softer edge to tailored work wear.

camel

The 50’s

1950’s inspired tailoring with wide led trousers and cinched in waists creates a feminine outline but can still be smart. A line skirts are also a fabulous fifties trend ideal for the office and suit most body types.

Camel

A soft, earthy colour that is understated and businesslike, it goes well with many other colours and will add a feminine touch to your work wardrobe.

Slender Dressing For Summer

July 27th, 2010

Now that summer is upon us and we’re shedding the layers, wouldn’t it be great if we could shed some unwanted pounds too?

Here at Business Wardrobe, we’ve got some great advice to help you look leaner and lovelier, without setting foot in the gym or cutting the calories.

Want to know more? Then read on!

1. Wear clothes that fit well – anything that is too tight draws attention to you for all the wrong reasons. Equally, rather than covering a multitude of sins, wearing loose baggy, bulky clothes will make you look bigger. Use our handy Size Guide to help you get the prefect fit first time.SpringSummer

 2. Wear solid colours instead of patterns and try to stick to the same colour range from head to toe. This has a lengthening effect on your body.

Any new colours you introduce to your outfit add a dividing line that breaks up the body.

Put together our Betty Jackson sharkskin separates for a co-ordinating look top to toe.

3. Wear dark, neutral colours on the parts of your body you’d like to camouflage.  Dark colours and matte fabrics absorb the light so cover lumps and bumps. Light, bright and shiny fabrics trap the light and highlight body contours. (Think of white shiny satin, the most unforgiving fabric there is!)

Our Helene Berman navy shift dress is a very flattering shape

4. If you have a bit of a tummy wear trousers at your natural waistline and never below it.

5. Long length scarves and beads have a very slimming effect by helping to eye to sweep quickly along the body.

6. If you’re going to wear stripes make sure they’re vertical and close together – the eye moves faster along a vertical line. The eye lingers along horizontal lines, creating a widening effect, vertical lines that are wide apart have the same unfortunate effect.New business meeting

7. Watch your top and jacket lengths.  Whenever a top or jacket is too long or too short it can make you look shorter/heavier.

If a particular garment looks a bit off and you don’t really know why, the chances are it’s the length that’s causing the problem.

This jacket is the perfect length for Claire Young, it’s well cut and gives her a great hourglass shape.

8. Wear lighter weight fabrics, as thick heavy fabrics will add unnecessary bulk and make you appear shorter and heavier.

Finally, the biggest secret of slender dressing is this; avoid wearing any of the following garments at all costs:

  • Blouses or shirts that gape in between the buttons
  • Clingy knitwear
  • Skirts and trousers that curve in under the buttocks or that dig into the crotch
  • Waistbands that are too tight – this is where nasty, unwanted bulges are created

Stay cool when the heat is on!

June 21st, 2010

BW 39328A summertime work wardrobe is the hardest look to pull off.  So when the heat is on, how can you dress professionally, yet still stay cool?

Let’s first look at the environment you work in. If your workplace is formal and wearing a matching suit is a must, you’ll need to pick up a lighter weight suit for summer time. You can now find a wide variety of suits made from super-fine wool, this wool is not like your old scratchy school blazer, its lighter yarn and smoother weave is perfect for the summer season.

Wool absorbs perspiration from the body, meaning that you’ll stay dry and cool. On a more practical level, wool doesn’t crease easily and is more resistant to wear and tear. Manufactured fibres and microfibres aren’t as breathable so tend to trap body heat, perspiration and odours.

Opt for waistcoats instead of jackets when the heat is on. You’ll still be smartly tailored but you’ll feel so much lighter and cooler.BW 39420

Ladies can get away with wearing a linen suit. Linen absorbs humidity, making it an ideal fabric for warmer weather.

Chambray is another fabric that is great for keeping the body cool, it has a high cotton content and is also very fashionable this summer.

We’ve got some great pieces from Betty Jackson’s S/S collection, well worth investing in when the temperature rises.

Summer is the ideal time to dress colourfully and to push the boundaries of your business wear. Why not try wearing a little dress to thBW 39527e office or a brighter coloured blouse? Outfits like these are also perfect for drinks after work too.

If the sky is the limit in your job role and you can dress much more casually, then beware that you don’t overdo it. When the heat is on, it’s often tempting to wander into work wearing shorts and sandals, but think again. Shorts are great barbeque gear but are generally BW 39377considered way too sloppy and casual for the workplace. So, unless the big boss is wearing shorts to work, save these for the weekend.

As a general rule, avoid showing too much shoulder or cleavage. A summer dress or top can be made more office-friendly by throwing on a shrug or cardigan.

With a little strategic shopping, it’s easy to build a work wardrobe that not only keeps you cool, but helps you look cool too!

Fashion Feng Shui

June 17th, 2010

Feng Shui is a popular eastern philosophy about improving the environment and harmony of your home or workplace using five elements, through the use of colour and the positioning of certain objects.

Well did you know that there is such a thing as ‘fashion feng shui’? Feng shui not only applies to the home and workplace, it also applies to the clothing we wear. After all, our wardrobe is the most intimate environment, so the clothes we wear have the ability to energise us, create harmony and help us attract the things we want. Equally they can make us feel anxious, restless and unfulfilled.

When you think about it, that’s so true. How often do we put on an item of clothing for work and it seems to drain our energy. Yet certain outfits really make us come to life. We describe ourselves as “being in our element” and since feng shui is all about elemental five elemental energies, water, earth, fire, wood and metal. This insight into fashion feng shui will help you to discover what textures, colours, shapes and fabrics will help you achieve the right flow of energy from your own wardrobe, it might even improve your performance in the workplace too!

BW 39313

Water Energy – Water is all about being a philospher. Whenever you want to be calm, thoughtful, be taken seriously or even to be left alone by the rest of the world you should reach for your darkest coloured clothing in flowing, drapy fabrics.  Fine knits, chiffon, silk and velvet are all water-energetic fabrics. Asymmetric patterns or accessories will also help you achieve this energy.

BW 39242

Wood Energy – Wood energy is all about growth, movement and action. So if you want to get things done then wear water energetic colours such as green, blue, floral prints and stripes. Choose natural, plant-based fabrics such as cotton, denim and linen and shapes that are more columnar and rectangular.

Inject some wood energy into your wardrobe with our Helene Berman navy floral print sheath dress.

BW 39500

Fire Energy – Fire is about bringing pleasure into your life. If you want to attract others to you, have fun and frivolity and want others to notice you, then reach for red, purple, orange and pink – just like all the colours you’ll see in a roaring fire.

Life-like fabrics such as animal prints and anything noisy, shiny or clingy such as taffetta, lycra, satin and fur will all help you draw on your fire enery.

This pink jacket is a great example of a fire energy item from our In Wear collection.

BW 39512

Earth Energy – If you long for warmth and commitment from others, to nurture and be nurtured, then earth energetic design elements such as yellows, browns and earthtones will help you achieve this.

Fabrics such as tweeed, plaids, checks and flannel and anything that is multi-dimensional, will almost reach out to others.

We have a great range of earthy tailored neutrals such as this grey dress from Quin and Donnelly.

BW 39296 Metal Energy – For those days when attention to detail, discipline, excellence and precision are vital, then it’s metal energy you need to draw upon. Choose clothes that are pale or metallic colours such as white, grey and pastels.

Wear accessories or detailing that is polished or curved. Shimmering, metallic fabrics and knitwear will also help garner the flow of metal energy you need and help you bring perfection to all that you do!

For precision and style opt for a white shirt from The Shirt Company or a classic jacket with a contemporary twist from Quin & Donnelly.

What words best describe the ideal first impression?

May 18th, 2010

If you want to have influence and authority in your role then darker neutral colours will add gravitas to your look. A matching suit in navy or black with a crisp white shirt is the most formal way of dressing for work but will show people that you’re in charge. BW 39291This suit is by Quin & Donnelly- It is classic and smart but has the subtle black trim detail.

A more chiselled toe on your shoes also adds to your influence and authority. If it’s more important for you to be approachable in your role, you can afford to be a little less formal with your dress. A pair of tailored trousers will ensure you still look professional but you can add softer fabrics such as knitwear and jersey on top.

Brown, light grey, purple and cream are all flattering colours in mid-tone neutrals, so it will help you to stay looking business-like but give you a much more relaxed look. Brighter colours will help you stand out and are more energetic, creative and fun. Take a look at our colourful blouses, shirts and tops from designers such as Helene Berman, Quin & Donnelly and Betty Jackson which instantly add some vivacity to your outfit.

Whenever you’re updating your work wardrobe always keep in mind how your colleagues/clients expect you to dress and what message you want your image to say about you. That way, you’ll have the perfect outfit for every occasion.
